In order flow analysis, an imbalance refers to a significant difference between market buys and sells at a given price level. When much more buying occurs at the ask, or selling at the bid, it can indicate aggressive market behavior — a moment where one side takes control of the interaction.
Clusters of these imbalances across multiple price levels in the same candle are often read as signs of initiative. For some traders, they suggest that larger participants may be actively entering or defending a position.
While imbalances don’t guarantee a move in any direction, they can help highlight areas where pressure built up — zones that may later act as support, resistance, or points of reaction.
